Huge started writing this song for a bet in 1996. At the time he'd just had *another* band fall apart through no fault of his and had moved in with his then-girlfriend (now wife), Angie, quit his comfortable public service job and gone back to Uni to study journalism.
Angie asked why Huge didn't just give up the whole music thing, and he explained that he couldn't. She wondered why, and he explained that it was just sort of in him and wouldn't go away (he'd tried before). She said if it was in him, he had better prove it - could he write something right now?
Huge started stuffing about with a Bluesy thing in A and had written the three verses by that night. The middle 8 took another couple of years and lots of fiddling.
On this version, the saxophone was played by "Dr" Pete Baker, and the bass by Peter "Willy" Willersdrof. All other noises were made by Huge and most were recorded and engineered by"Big" Phil van Vliet. Drums recorded by Adam Howard.
I get up. Face the day unfolding before me.
Oh, I feel down when I think about a nine-to-five grind.
Well I don't need to feed my ego with money.
So I try to look around:
Try to find reason,
I'm waiting for the season,
I'll finally reap what I have sown.
Got a girl who thinks there's something special about me.
Hey we get down. We forget about the nine-to-five grind.
Got some friends who love a song to brighten the night-time.
So we all got the blues,
Guitars at 20 paces,
A sea of smiling faces,
I'm payin' my dues.
And I long for the day when that's all I have to do.
No more traffic, no more tools
No more fixin' for fools
No more Yes Sir or Ma'am!
Gonna be who I am
I just wanna play
Wanna give this work away
They ain't got a clue
I'll bid them Adieu
And long for the day, when that's all I have to do.
Got a dream. Some day I'll be somebody special.
Hey I got a plan. To get me out to make my way.
But it's so hard. A helpg hand can make it seem easy,
So we all play along,
Laughing and writing,
Loving and fighting,
Singing our songs,
And I long for the day when that's all I have to do.
Yeah I long for the day when that's all I have to do. (How 'bout you?)
I know I long for the day when that's all I have to do, babe.
